Invisible Man
Brotherhood was not an organization that they presented themselves in public and to the people who worked for it. There were so many signs that were showing narrator that he needed to get away from the organization. The main goals of organization were to provide better life conditions and society for all people, and to fight for equality. It would be perfect if on the president of the organization was a black man, but leading roles in the organization had all white people. Black people were sent on the street, talking or even fighting with Ras’s organization. Do the white people want the equality? What are they benefits from equality?! What do they get? Also if you are not allowed to express your thinking, what does that saying to you!?

“Our job is not to ask them what they think but to tell them.”

Invisible Man saw and experienced inappropriate things with Brotherhood, where his doubt began to rise.  The main event in the book was meeting of narrator and Tod Clifton who was selling the Sambo dolls, and who was killed because he was black. Invisible Man finally started believing that everything he was used as a tool (“you were not hired to think”) and that he worthed nothing as a person to the people who were leaders in the organization. He also understood that Brotherhood, as also he did nothing to help black people.

“All our work had been very little, no great change had been made.  And it was all my fault. I’d been so fascinated by the motion that I’d forgotten to measure what it was bringing forth. I’d been asleep, dreaming.”

“Tod Clifton believed in Brotherhood, he aroused our hopes and he died.”

His grandfathers’ words before he died came to him and he actually realized that his grandfather was not crazy and that he was telling him truth. He started following his grandfather’s advice. Outside he will pretend to be nice, polite, and loyal to whites, in this case Brotherhood, but on the other hand inside he would make his plans to make his life better and to stop racism.

“Live with your head in the lion’s mouth. I want you to overcome ‘em with yeses, undermine ‘em with grins, agree ‘em to death and destruction, let ‘em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open.”
